Latest Generation

2022-2024

The latest generation, starting from the 2022 model year, brought a significant redesign to the Tundra, including new powertrains and a modernized multimedia system. The traditional V8 engine was replaced with two twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 options, including a 389-hp standard engine and a 437-hp hybrid, both mated with a 10-speed automatic transmission. This generation emphasizes advanced safety features, with the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 suite standard across all trims. The truck also boasts a maximum towing capacity of 12,000 pounds and a payload of 1,940 pounds. The redesign also included improvements to the ride quality with the introduction of coil springs for the rear suspension, and the truck bed was made of dent-resistant composite material.

Previous Generation

2007-2021

The second-generation Tundra, launched in 2007, represented a significant upscale shift, both in size and capabilities, to compete directly with the dominant half-ton domestic trucks. This Texas-built Tundra came with three different cab sizes, bed lengths, and a choice of engine options, including the powerful 5.7-liter V8. The truck was well-received for its towing capacity, approximately 10,000 pounds, and a smooth six-speed automatic transmission. However, this generation faced criticism for lacking the refinement of its domestic counterparts, particularly in terms of ride quality and cabin noise. Notable updates included the introduction of Toyota Safety Sense-P in 2018, which added advanced safety features, and the TRD Sport trim, offering enhanced suspension and styling.

2000-2006

Introduced in 2000, the first-generation Tundra marked Toyota's entry into the full-size pickup truck market. It was built on a platform shared with the Toyota Sequoia SUV and offered in two cab configurations with two bed-length choices. Initially equipped with a 190-hp, 3.4-liter V6 and a 245-hp, 4.7-liter V8 option, the Tundra focused on a combination of performance and comfort. Over the years, it received several updates, including new features like a limited-slip differential, a TRD Off-Road Package, and a unique V8 StepSide Access Cab model in 2003. The introduction of a longer double cab in 2004 and powertrain upgrades in subsequent years enhanced its utility and performance.
